Firefly (2002-2003)

Firefly is a Space Western television series following the adventures of a renegade crew of a firefly spacecraft, Serenity. The year is 2517 and humans have relocated on a new star system. Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), captain of the Serenity, was a former Independent sergeant in the Battle of Serenity. He fought alongside with Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres) during the war and is also the second-in-command in Serenity. Her husband is the pilot of the ship, Hoban Washburne (Alan Tudyk). Other members of the crew is the hired muscle, Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin) and the ships mechanic, Kaylee Frye (Jewel Staite). Although not officially a member of the crew, Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin) is a Companion that rents out one of Serenity's shuttles and often travels with them. While picking up passengers for extra money in Persephone, the crew unknowingly harbored two fugitive siblings, Dr. Simon (Sean Maher) and River Tam (Summer Glau). Later on, Dr. Simon becomes a part of the crew as the their on-board medic. Another passenger, Shepherd Book (Ron Glass) traveled with them throughout the series.

Firefly was my first Space Western TV series and I couldn't think of any other better show to start off my exploration in this genre. The storyline is splendid and the characters aren’t perfect but very likeable. It’s such a shame that the series was cancelled, it has so much potential. Sci-fi fans should definitely give this one a try.
